Much of novelist William P. McGivern´s work has been adapted easily to the screen, and director Robert Butler´s 1980 film of Night of the Juggler fits neatly into the urban thriller genre. Shot on the streets of Manhattan, the film works effectively to build excitement as the search intensifies for a kidnapper and serial killer.
James Brolin plays the father of the girl who has disappeared, and Cliff Gorman is the cop heading a task force that is searching for a serial killer who might have taken her. Richard Castellano plays the killer, a psychopath who always strikes on the anniversary of his mother´s death. The film is not exactly a love letter to New York, capturing the city in one of its least attractive periods, but it creates a powerful urban tension for this solid thriller of a story.
