About The Movie
The film adaptation of The Last Angry Man, released in 1959, is remembered chiefly for Paul Muni´s performance as Dr. Sam Abelman, his last significant screen role which won his fifth Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Directed by Daniel Mann, from a screenplay by novelist Gerald Green and Richard Murphy, the film also stars David Wayne as TV producer Woody Trasher and Betsy Palmer as his wife.

The Last Angry Man is an earnest film adaptation that seems dated now primarily in its depiction of the African-American characters Dr. Abelman treats. That said, the cast includes in small (some uncredited) roles some of the finest African-American actors of their generation -- Billy Dee Williams, Godfrey Cambridge, Claudia McNeil and Cicely Tyson. Also appearing in the film are Luther Adler, Joby Baker and Joanna Cook Moore.

Muni´s performance is an impressive valedictory to acting. Having won an Oscar some 23 years earlier for his performance in The Story of Louis Pasteur, the actor was best known for his portrayals of famous men in a series of Warner Bros. biographical films including The Life of Emile Zola and Juarez. Earlier, he had delivered memorable performances in the title roles of I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang and the original Scarface. Muni´s acting was often criticized for its theatrical abandon -- the Polish-born actor had begun his career (as Muni Weisenfreund) in the Yiddish theater -- but the role of Dr. Sam Abelman was an ideal vehicle for what would be his last performance in any medium.

Gerald Green wrote the screenplay for a 1974 television remake of The Last Angry Man with Pat Hingle as Abelman, directed by Jerrold Freedman. The cast included Lynn Carlin, Paul Jabara, Tracy Bogart and Sorrell Brooke.
