About The Movie
The Prince of Tides was Pat Conroy´s most successful novel, and its 1991 film version has been the most successful and profitable screen adaptation of his work. In fact, Conroy collaborated on the script with Becky Johnston, for which he shared Oscar and Writers Guild of America nominations. The film comes from perhaps an unlikely source -- it was a personal project of Barbra Streisand, who produced and directed it, and played Dr. Susan Lowenstein. Well-groomed and thoughtfully made, the film reflects Streisand´s famous attention to detail. Considerable critical acclaim greeted the film when it was released, noting the quality of the adaptation and the performances, and it figured prominently in film awards presented for 1991.

Nick Nolte´s remarkable performance as Tom Wingo gave his career a new lease on life, and it won him a Golden Globe and the Los Angeles Film Critic Association Award for Best Actor, as well as an Oscar nomination. In fact, the film won Oscar nominations in seven categories, including Best Picture, but the voters´ snubbing of Streisand in the Best Director category caused controversy. Streisand did make the cut in that year´s nominations for the Directors Guild of America´s awards.

The impressive cast includes Blythe Danner as Tom´s wife, Kate Nelligan (an Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actress) as his mother, Melinda Dillon as his sister Savannah and Jeroen Krabbe as Lowenstein´s husband. Streisand´s own son, Jason Emmanuel Gould, plays her character´s son in the film, a role that at one point was to have been played by Chris O´Donnell.
