About The Movie
Pat Conroy went to some pains to insist that his novel The Lords of Discipline was not based solely on his experience at The Citadel, the military academy in Charleston, S.C., from which he graduated. The 1983 film version went perhaps further -- much of it was shot in England. The director, Franc Roddam, was English, and the film was his first after making a successful feature debut in 1979 with Quadrophenia, starring The Who. It failed to register at the box office, but it continues to be a staple on cable TV and home video.

With a screenplay by Lloyd Fonvielle and Thomas Pope, The Lords of Discipline features a strong American cast, led by David Keith -- fresh from his breakthrough role a year earlier in An Officer and a Gentleman -- in the role of Will McLean. (Keith can be seen in a small role in the 1980 film version of Conroy´s The Great Santini.) Michael Biehn, Rick Rossovich, Mitchell Lichtenstein and Mark Breland play McLean´s fellow cadets, with character actors G.D. Spradlin as the sinister Gen. Durrell and Robert Prosky as The Bear. Also seen in smaller roles are Judge Reinhold, Bill Paxton, Jason Connery and Matt Frewer.
