"The Basis for ""The Thing"""

"Watch the skies...", the famous last line of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, became a catchphrase in the early l950´s. The film, produced by Howard Hawks, was directed by Christian Nyby (although it is now generally assumed that the actual direction was by the film´s producer, Howard Hawks. The cast included Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Douglas Spencer, James Arness and the very young George Fenneman (Groucho´s announcer and sidekick on YOU BET YOUR LIFE). The score was by Dmitri Tiomkin (GIANT and HIGH NOON for which latter he won an Academy Award). The terrifying isolation and mounting horror of the crews´ predicament are starkly limned through short scenes which bring one researcher then another under suspicion. Scenes of carnage comprise some of the most notable special effects of this era. The conclusion, in which the screaming and terrified alien is finally burned to death before the audience and dies in liquefaction. is unforgettable. The film is still a staple of late night television and horror festivals. A novelty song inspired by the film, also called THE THING, and performed by Phil Harris, was a hit parade smash in l95l.

THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD was remade on a much larger budget by John Carpenter in l982 as THE THING with Kurt Russell, A. Wilford Brimley, Richard Dysart, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, T.K. Carter and David Clennon. Carpenter, of course, is famed as the director of the HALLOWEEN film and its sequel, poised and disturbing films which brought the horror film to a new level of artistic achievement. The special effects of the commercially successful remake were regarded as even more spectacular than those of the original version.
