Natural remedies for sleepless nights
One sheep, two sheep, three sheep, four… Still counting sheep at night with no luck? More than 60 percent of women have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up rested.
And before turning to prescription medication to get a peaceful night sleep, many people first look for natural remedies and supplements.
Dr. Anthony Komaroff, a practicing physician, professor and editor-in-chief of Harvard Health Publications, says the most commonly used herbal sleep aid is valerian root. But evidence, he adds, is mixed on its usefulness and side affects, therefore it’s not something he recommends. Another popular sleep remedy – with little research shown to help sleep – is melatonin.
“Over-the counter melatonin is sold as a food supplement in the United States, and like valerian, its manufacture is not regulated,” Dr. Komaroff says.
Alternative approaches to these two sleep aids are acupressure, tai chi, yoga and meditation. Even a cup of chamomile tea before bed can help you relax.
