The book is Time One: Discover How the Universe Began. Author Colin Gillespie and his publishing partner Howard Gurevich, founders of the publisher Big Fizz Inc., have been wrestling with this question for years. Gillespie is a physicist turned lawyer turned author. Howard Gurevich is a marketer turned publisher.

Time One was published as a $44.95 hardcover and $9.99 eBook, with the book’s editions supported by a website and social media platforms. RosettaBooks, the distributor of the eBook, is also supporting the social media front.

Gillespie chose to decline the “traditional” publishing route for two reasons: 1) based on the writing voice, a traditional publisher would “platform” the book in their current science publishing program, and 2) today’s publishing world backs so-called midlist titles with a budget proportionate to the first printing, which pretty much assures that no one will discover the book.

There is no debate that an energetic, well-backed author can do better self-publishing if the traditional publishers are not prepared to give the book treatment toward the top of their lists. But a more interesting debate will be whether the established author can do better self-publishing.

We have started to learn the success stories in category fiction through self-publishing, often with eBook editions first. What if literary fiction and serious works of history, biography, science and the like can be launched successfully by the author (with or without partners) as well? Isn’t attention for new voices and unusual works exactly what the publishing process is supposed to provide readers?

It will be months before the outcome of this experiment is clear. In the meantime, Time One will be exposed through these untraditional means that it wouldn’t have otherwise.

How can libraries become a more significant source of revenue for trade eBooks? That’s the first question we should be asking ourselves – not debating pricing and terms of access.

So far, the business models for distributors and aggregators are built to reflect the sale of eBooks to libraries with the option to purchase one title at a time.

Ebrary and its parent company, ProQuest, focus on scholarly electronic databases, scientific and technical eBooks, as well as other flexible acquisition options such as usage-based publishing, short-term loans, and one title at a time. Until recently, trade eBooks have been a modest part of their business model.

In January, ebrary will introduce three trade eBook “bundles” from RosettaBooks:

18 Kurt Vonnegut titles, led by Slaughterhouse-Five
35 Arthur C. Clarke titles, led by 2001: A Space Odyssey
30 Books into Film titles, led by Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

This will offer an even wider selection of content for its customers. The bundles consist of three copies of each eBook, with a list price of $13.99 (versus the retail digital list price of $8.99), and multiple copies of the lead title. The purchasing library “owns” the bundle. The titles are available for one use at a time. Price points per bundle vary but are usually over $1,000.

Ebrary sells to over 4,500 library customers worldwide serving more than 19.2 million end-users.

It is far more interesting to experiment with models like these to see if libraries, publishers, authors and most importantly readers can benefit, rather than get hung up on the debate between publishers and libraries.

In January, RosettaBooks issued its first iBooks Author eBook – The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden. In the 1970s, this book was an international sensation, selling millions of copies. Still today, its art images continue to support licensing programs including a long-term paper products line at Marks & Spencer in London.

It is rare that an illustrated book becomes a bestseller. For those that do, the life of the book tends to be short-lived. To reissue an older illustrated book successfully, there are many reasons why it’s difficult. Two main reasons are cost and distribution. Apple’s iBooks Author tools have allowed us to revive this bestseller to match as closely as possible to the original handwritten diary using top quality transparencies. We’ve hot-linked 300 terms to give the reader contextual information and added an animation piece to introduce the book as well as an audio interview with Rowena Scott, whose great aunt wrote the diary.

The result is a more compelling version than any prior print edition. In some ways, it is more practical and engaging than the original itself. Priced at $9.99 – a fraction of the coffee table print book price – the edition stays on sale as long as we like. And the English language sale of the eBook is available instantly in 23 countries.Content owners also stand to make significantly higher royalties per digital sale than they would likely make on net proceeds from a print sale.

All in all, it’s a strong case for the role of the iBooks Author edition in terms of “reincarnating” past print illustrated bestsellers.

The screaming, arms flailing, tears, and the staring from strangers… Sound familiar? Welcome to parenthood!

Tantrums can be your child’s way of letting you know that you’re not meeting his or her needs. They are hungry, tired, bored, scared… it could really be anything.

In Taming Your Child’s Temper Tantrums, a Harvard Medical School Guide, co-authors Dr. Victoria Rogers McEvoy and Karen Weintraub remind parents that many tantrums can be stopped before they start.

The first way is to always carry healthy snacks with you in case your child gets hungry. Low blood sugar equals a cranky child. And make sure your child is well-rested. Naps are a good idea! If your child is really energetic, make sure he or she gets plenty of play time – whether it’s learning activities or playing outside.

Remember, you are in charge. But if your child wants some independence, offer some limited choices. For example, instead of just saying “eat your banana,” offer them to choose between eating a banana or blueberries, or some other type of fruit you have in the house.

Overall, children love predictability, so try to be consistent with meals, naps and bedtime.

Twenty to 30 percent of children of all ages suffer from some sort of sleep disturbance. If your child is one of them, there are dozens of proven and effective ways to help them get better sleep and be more refreshed and alert during the day.

Dr. Dennis Rosen, a pediatrician at Harvard Medical School, introduces the latest scientific discoveries in the field of pediatric sleep in his book, Successful Sleep Strategies for Kids, a Harvard Medical School Guide.

Some practical solutions include:

• keeping your child’s bedroom dark, quiet and at a comfortable temperature;
• limiting caffeine intake (soda and chocolate) at least eight hours before bedtime; and
• reducing the intensity of your child’s reading lamp.

And there may be some things you’re already doing, that might not be a good idea – such as playing music.

“The ingenious melodies and rhythms are compelling and call to you even when you’re asleep,” said Dr. Anthony Komaroff, a practicing physician, professor and editor-in-chief of Harvard Health Publications. “And if you play it, but let it stop when the piece ends, your child may notice the sudden absence of music and have trouble falling back to sleep without it.”

Successful Sleep Strategies for Kids also details how to prevent sleepwalking, night terrors and bedwetting.

One sheep, two sheep, three sheep, four… Still counting sheep at night with no luck? More than 60 percent of women have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up rested.

And before turning to prescription medication to get a peaceful night sleep, many people first look for natural remedies and supplements.

Dr. Anthony Komaroff, a practicing physician, professor and editor-in-chief of Harvard Health Publications, says the most commonly used herbal sleep aid is valerian root. But evidence, he adds, is mixed on its usefulnessand side affects, therefore it’s not something he recommends. Another popular sleep remedy – with little research shown to help sleep – is melatonin.

“Over-the counter melatonin is sold as a food supplement in the United States, and like valerian, its manufacture is not regulated,” Dr. Komaroff says.

Alternative approaches to these two sleep aids are acupressure, tai chi, yoga and meditation. Even a cup of chamomile tea before bed can help you relax.

For more information on this topic, you can read Successful Sleep Strategies for Women, a Harvard Medical School Guide, by Dr. Julia Schlam Edelman. In the eBook, Dr. Edelman guides readers through the latest scientific research findings in natural sleep remedies, lifestyle modifications and recommended prescription pills.

Does your child prefer white or beige foods only – mashed potatoes, white bread and plain noodles – and refuse to eat anything with color? If so, you’re not alone. And by the time your child reaches the age of 10, they should be ready to expand their palates, say pediatricians at Harvard Medical School.

But if you’re worried now about your little one not getting enough nutrients and fiber, there are some things you can start doing to “gently” change eating behaviors.

In Getting Your Child to Eat (Almost) Anything, a Harvard Medical School Guide, Dr. Qian Yuan, with Robin Westen, offer tips on how to increase your child’s familiarity with and positive response to foods you want him/her to eat.

For example, one of the most important tips is for parents to set an example. Show your kids that you like making healthy food choices. You can also get them involved by letting them help you prepare dinner.

Some instances might also involve you having to be sneaky by mixing healthy foods with your child’s favorite foods. A great way to do this is by making (white or beige colored) smoothies, by adding milk, pears and yellow apples.

But most importantly, pediatricians say, pressuring your child and promise of rewards will backfire. It’s important to be patient and consult your pediatrician if you have any concerns.

What is the best way for publishers to protect themselves from digital piracy? One option is self-enforcement. Another is to engage outside counsel, which can be incredibly expensive. But both of these approaches only scratch the surface of locating the number of infringing sites. And neither approach is effective over time unless there is constant vigilance for each title.

So what does a publisher, an agent or an author do?

At RosettaBooks, we retained Digimarc Guardian to protect our entire eBook catalog. Their sophisticated software identified far more illegal downloading sites than we could have identified any other way. In the early months, there were a large number of successful takedowns, particularly for our bestselling titles. But more importantly, the number of takedowns in later months was steady. Without this piracy protection service, the same level of piracy would have been back within a few months.

Working with our colleagues at Digimarc Guardian, we wrote a case study that documents the sales impact of enforcing against piracy for some of our bestselling titles. We found that those titles grew in sales much faster than our catalog in general. This is a natural consequence of a successful anti-piracy campaign, as readers who find illegal downloading sites are a targeted audience for the books and are more likely to purchase the books if no free options are available. Early on, RosettaBooks committed to full catalog protection and this course of action has been highly successful. We are generating more sales for ourselves and our authors as a result of full catalog enforcement, while simultaneously fulfilling a fiduciary responsibility to our authors.

Agents and authors should demand that their publishers commit to full catalog protection. Enforcement will yield economic benefits for everyone involved and will protect their books from the ever-growing problem of digital piracy.

Some authors spend their whole career with one publisher, but such tight partnerships are rare. More often, prolific authors are published by many different publishers, which results in a dispersed backlist. Since many of these authors were writing before the eBook industry developed, many of their titles are out of print and unavailable as eBooks. As such, a dispersed backlist presents a challenge in selling an author’s collective works.

Unifying an author’s backlist for eBook publication is a tough licensing task, but if successful, such a program can achieve a number of objectives. All of the author’s backlist titles become available in an eBook collection with the same digital list price. Since the eBooks are all published by one company, the jacket design of the eBooks can be consistent. Moreover, merchandising through social media can fully leverage the collection as a whole, as opposed to merchandising title by title.

An excellent example of such a program is RosettaBooks’ release of 35 major Arthur C. Clarke works, originally published in print editions by more than 50 publishing imprints. The collection is now available for sale at all major sites, at a digital list price of $8.99 per title. Their sci-fi appeal makes these titles prime for merchandising as a collection, which is a marketing strategy that the major retailers will support. We have also found that the success of the eBook collection drives print sales. Thus, the unified collection allows us to bring more attention to the Arthur C. Clarke backlist than has been possible for decades.

This backlist collection, both visible and profitable, is beneficial for RosettaBooks, the estate of Arthur C. Clarke and Clarke’s legions of fans. We hope that the continued success of the collection will result in a new generation of readers discovering Arthur C. Clarke’s impressive body of work for the very first time.
